Your eyes are still shining, your voice I hear.
The pain is intense to not have you near.
I want to be with you to feel the feel,
That we have shared in body and soul.
The thought of Tracie sitting at her mum’s kitchen table with a fag burning as she sat writing such a load of old shit was almost as ridiculous as her efforts to try and win public sympathy. She’d never written Lee a poem while he’d been alive – why dedicate this Mills and Boon-style bollocks to him now?
‘I watched him die and part of me died with him,’ she’d said. ‘I’m not responsible for his death. I know I’m going to prison but I’ll fight to clear my name.’
Her plan to make people think what a caring, sensitive soul she was had backfired, though, because the paper had left its readers in no doubt about her guilt.
Another headline story to emerge that day was Andy Tilston’s. He hadn’t made a police statement or given evidence at the trial, but he’d happily spoken to a reporter. It would have been a lot harder to cope with if we hadn’t heard it from the horse’s mouth. But, when we saw the story splashed across two pages in all its tabloid glory, we couldn’t understand why Andy had done it. It was his sensational account of how Tracie had threatened him with a knife after a night out at a working men’s club near her home.
‘I’d only had one drink but Tracie lost her temper about me wanting to drive home,’ he’d said. ‘When we got home, she flipped. She took a knife from the kitchen and waved it towards me. She’d lost it. I took the knife from her hand and grabbed her. When Tracie gets angry, her eyes go wide.’
Andy said that, when police had interviewed her about the incident, she’d claimed he’d driven home drunk and denied ever having grabbed the knife.
The sex sessions that had kept Lee going back to Tracie were mirrored in the three-month relationship she’d reportedly had with Martin Lismore. He’d talked to another paper, saying that he’d ditched her after recognising what he described as ‘inner rage’ and felt lucky to have got out of the relationship. His revelations about their sex life left nothing to the imagination as he described their all-night bonking sessions. ‘She’d do anything to please her man,’ he said. ‘She was bloody good in bed. Very adventurous and demanding. She needed it every day. She was a nymphomaniac. She couldn’t get enough. She had all the gear to turn me on… She would start on me while I was sitting in the chair and spend half-an-hour caressing me to get me in the mood. Then we’d go to bed and make love for a couple of hours. The minute I woke up in the morning, she’d start on me again. She’d always have music on while we were in bed. Once, when we went out together, she flicked up her black dress to show me she wasn’t wearing any knickers.
